The Unique Spirituality of Women and Children: Chapter 12 – Emanation Consciousness – No Friction

In human consciousness, one can reach a level in which he is truly in the face of G-d, and possesses no self-consciousness. This does not mean that he is static in any way. On the contrary, he can be tremendously active. He is just not conscious of himself. Not only is he not thinking that "it is my power and my energy that is producing this result," but even more than that, he doesn't know himself at all. He is truly all G-d. Self-consciousness is spiritual friction. A person's self-consciousness stunts spiritual growth. If a person would have no self-consciousness, he would be in perpetual motion. It has always been the dream of mankind to create a machine of perpetual motion. This is impossible in this world because of friction. Friction prevents perpetual motion of any machine. In the world of Emanation there is no friction, because there is no self-consciousness. Therefore, there is perpetual motion. The process is fast and continuous, like the speed of light. This is why the concept of light corresponds to the world of Emanation. Light has no mass, or self-consciousness. Therefore it is the relative state of infinity within creation.

The world of Creation is the beginning of self-consciousness, as yet formless. The world of Formation is one of a self-image, self-consciousness. The world of Action is consciousness of where one is, as in the sin of Adam which took place on Rosh HaShanah. G-d addressed him, "Where are you?" "Where are you in the world?" Adam tried to evade this primary question. G-d's query must be taken seriously. One must begin to work to rectify himself. That is the level of consciousness of the world of Action. One must always strive in the direction of spiritual growth.
