The Unique Spirituality of Women and Children: Chapter 6 – Inner Dimension of Torah and the Inner Dimension of Heart

Men are required by Jewish law to spend most of their time, spiritual and mental effort learning the revealed dimension of the Torah. One of the reasons that women are required to a much lesser extent to learn the revealed dimension of the Torah is in order to allow them to devote themselves, whether by study or in meditation from the heart, to the deeper, inner dimension of the Torah.

Kabbalah considers the mind and the depth of thought to be external to the innermost point of the heart. A woman is connected naturally and instinctively to the inner dimension of reality, and to the inner dimension of the heart. "The mind is intended to rule over the heart." (Moach shalit al halev), is a directive to prevent the pursuit of the lusts and passions of the heart. The mind has to control the heart. But there is a corresponding expression, "When one merits to reveal the inner dimension of the heart, this inner dimension controls the mind." (Pniminut halev shalit al hamoach). This is a task especially for women. It especially pertains to the period preceding Rosh HaShanah. The entire period of Elul and the High Holidays is calculated to arouse every Jew. A power from G-d helps us in this period of the year to reveal the inner dimension of the heart, which is higher than the mind. This inner dimension of the heart is the source of the wisdom of women. It does not come from the rational mind, but rather from the inner dimension of the heart which controls the mind. Obviously one cannot reach that level without first mastering the level of the rational mind controlling the external lusts of the heart. But, especially during the High Holiday season, this is not the final goal. We must reach the state of the inner dimension of the heart controlling the mind.
