Q&A: Nightmares

Q: My five-year-old son has been having nightmares and is afraid to go to sleep in his own bed. What can I do to help him?

A: Calm your son, and you can give him a prize if he stays in his own bed all night. Keep telling him stories of chassidim. In particular, to help him deal with his nightmares, you can tell him the story of how when the Ba'al Shem Tov was a small boy, his father told him never to fear anyone or anything except God. When the Ba'al Shem Tov was still a small boy, he liked to walk alone in the forest. One day, while walking in the forest, he met a man who asked him, "Aren't you afraid to be alone in the forest?" The Ba'al Shem Tov answered, "I have no fear of anything, except for God." When the man made an inference that God is no longer on earth, the Ba'al Shem Tov hit him with his stick, and the man disappeared. On the same note, you can tell your son that if he dreams about someone or something scary, in his dream he can also chase him away.

In addition, have him listen to many authentic Chassidic melodies.
