Concealment and Revelation

As we approach the coming of Mashiach, we must act in reality through a process of "concealment and revelation" – expressing our faith appropriately and thereby bringing the hidden inner truth of reality to light. The world is already prepared to receive the truth – we need only to reveal it.

The Nation of Israel’s ownership of the Land of Israel in our first two entries into the Land was realized through a gradual process in reality. In the first entry, of the Israelites coming from Egypt, ownership was achieved through conquest. In the second entry, by the Jews returning from the Babylonian exile, ownership was established through presumptive possession (chazakah). These two processes correspond to our world, which was created and is shaped through essence and expansion – a method that requires effort to change the world and illuminate it with Divine light.

Indeed, we are destined for more than this: The Jewish people, children of Abraham, who engage in Torah and are destined to make a dwelling place for God in the lower worlds, have the innate ability to act through concealment and revelation. The world of Emanation, where Divine unity is revealed as it truly is, emanates from God without change or innovation. What was concealed in its source is revealed in reality as it is. The Jewish People, whose souls remain "literally a part of God above" even as they descend below, has the ability to act through the revelation of the concealed in this world. We are capable of exposing, instantaneously, the inner Divine reality that already exists in concealment.

In the final entry to the Land, to be led by Mashiach, Israel’s ownership of the Land will appear differently. We will reveal the fact that in the covenant that God made with Abraham when He promised him the Land of Israel (the Covenant Between the Parts), "To your descendants I have given this land" has already been fulfilled. The Land of Israel has always been ours and we need only bring this fact from concealment to revelation. While the borders of the Land of Israel in the first entry to the Land, and even more so in the second entry, were limited according to the extent of conquest or possession, the Land we will merit in the third entry – through concealment and revelation, instantaneously – will be within the broad boundaries that God promised and gave to Abraham.

Regarding this form of inheriting the Land, it is said, "He declared to His people the power of His works, in giving them the inheritance of nations." The Almighty does not reveal the power of His works to the nations themselves, but only "to His people." When we act according to our Jewish nature, as conduits of our faith to the entire world, the nations act according to their true nature and receive this truth from us.

The first thing that we need to do is to open our own eyes. We must know the inner truth of reality by studying the Divine truth of the Torah. To accomplish this, we will also use the special "medicines" of the inner dimension of the Torah and the advice of the great physicians – the Baal Shem Tov, the Alter Rebbe, and their successors. When we recognize that the world is ready for redemption, that 'Mashiach is already here,' and we need only remove the concealment – we can express this to the entire world. We can influence it through the revelation of the Torah’s guidance in current events, starting with our declaration of full sovereignty over the Land of Israel.

The recognition that everything is ready for Mashiach in the inner dimension deepens our pain regarding the concealment in external reality. It infuses us with the energy to do all within our power and beyond to remove the veil concealing the truth and reveal it to the entire world. It is our task and within our capabilities to redeem the world from the captivity of its distorted perception of reality and transform it – and us – into the reality of true and complete redemption.
