Q: I have a critical nature and am often verbally critical. Recently I have come to see that it has caused me heartache and alienation. What would the Rabbi say about my verbal blunders? Is there a prayer I can say before I speak and injure someone?
A: It is advisable to recite chapter 51 in Tehillim on a regular basis, and to repeat often the verse, (12) "God, create for me a pure heart." Also repeat verse 15, “I will teach transgressors Your ways; and sinners shall return to You” often. Try to invest as much of your time and energy as possible into bringing Jews close to Torah.
Also, it is important to remember that a person is born with two eyes. The right eye is for looking at others with a "good eye," and to bless them, as is written "A person with a good eye will bless." The left eye is for self-criticism, so that a person can improve his own service of God. Traditionally, the right eye takes precedence over the left eye. May God shine his light upon you as you activate your right eye and positive thinking!
