Gematria Shorts for Parashat Devarim 5782

  • Parashat Devarim begins, “These are the words” (אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים). There are 3 other parashot that start with the same word, “These” (אֵלֶּה). They are: parashat Noach (אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדֹת נֹחַ), parashat Pekudei (אֵלֶּה פְּקוּדֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן), and parashat Massei (אֵלֶּה מַסְעֵי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל). The value of these 4 opening phrases is 2701, the value of the Torah’s opening verse, “In the beginning…” (בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱ-לֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ). 2701 is also the triangle of 73, meaning that it is the sum of the integers from 1 to 73. 73 itself is the value of “wisdom” (חָכְמָה).

  • The beginning of parashat Devarim reads, “These are the words that Moses spoke to all of Israel” (אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל כׇּל יִשְׂרָאֵל). The value of these words is 1971 and they consist of 27 letters (33). 1971 is a multiple of 27, specifically: 1971 is the product of 27 and 73. So the average value of each letter in the parashah’s opening phrase is “wisdom” (חָכְמָה). The sum of 27 and 73 (instead of their product) is 100, the value of “beauty” (יֹפִי). The difference between 73 and 27 is 46, the value of the word “one hundred” (מֵאָה).

  • The first 7 words of parashat Devarim are “These are the words the Moses spoke to all of” (אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל כׇּל). The value of these 7 words is 1430, a well-known number that equals, among other phenomena, the product of “everything” (הַכֹּל) and “Havayah” (הוי'), implying that “all is Havayah,” “all is God” (and its reverse, “God is all” [הוי' הַכֹּל]). They consist of 22 letters and once again, 1430 is a multiple of 22, specifically, the product of 22 and 65, the value of God’s pronounced Name, Adni (אֲ-דֹנָי), so the average value of each letter (the details included in “all is Havayah”) is Adni!

  • The first 6 words of parashat Devarim are “These are the words the Moses spoke to” (אֵלֶּה הַדְּבָרִים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל). Their sum is 1380, or 4 times “Moses” (מֹשֶׁה), which is the value of the front and backside of Moses (מ מש משה משה שה ה).

  • Tisha Be’av (תִּשְׁעָה בְּאָב) equals “Chasidut” (חֲסִידוּת) plus “healing” (רְפוּאָה). Chasidic teachings that heal are the remedy for Tisha Be’av, working to rebuild the Holy Temple that was destroyed on this day.
